I love the Granchester series, although it's nothing like the PBS show. Guess they have to keep the sexy Vicar single for the female audience watching. These are nice stories, for murders they are not really graphic, violent or bloody, they are in fact the most bloodless murder stories I have ever read. As per the previous books, each chapter is devoted to a different death. The final chapter in this book threw me for a loop, because I never expected something like this to happen. I was shocked, but I'm not saying what it was because if your buy the book, I would not want to spoil the surprise for future readers.Like all these books, these are gentle stories and the characters are likable for the most part. If you are a fan of the previous books, you will be delighted with this newest entry.

The books are much better than the TV program.
For a time it was not clear if I was reading a series of short stories or a novel. The fact that the situations were not all neatly resolved and the conversations with Anna stuck me as close to 'real life.' I did enjoy it greatly and look forward to more.
I like the Granchester books, but the books differ from the TV programs (at least up to now), so don't be surprised if the outcomes in their lives are not the same.
James Runcie is a wonderful author. His characters have imperfections which make them human and credible. I watched the PTV series and purchased the books. Vicar Sidney is a solid clergyman as well as amateur sleuth. He teams with another favorite, Geordie, which makes a solid team. Geordie had Clay feet also. Great series.
I love the Granchester books which have nothing to do with the Grantchester tv series. I'm a big James Norton fan, so I'm a watcher, but the books are much milder .. so far no sex except in an oblique way (after all, he has a daughter) .. and he's a dedicated church man. I enjoy the writing very much. But do not expect the Grantchester PBS series in book form.
Without going into details, this was in my opinion the very best book of the series, solely on the strength of the final chapter. The rest of the book was up to snuff and on a par with the other books in the series - a solid 4-star rating - but the final chapter is what bumps it up. Good series, and I look forward to the prequel that I understand the author is writing.
I have read all 6 of the Sidney Chambers mysteries by James Runcie. They are delightfully Britsh and full of interesting literature and history references, lots of detail and great dialogue. Taking place in and around Cambridge and Ely in a part of England I have visited often, they are set in 1950's to 1970's but Runcie is a contemporary author. PBS has had for 3 seasons (just ended third season), a series suggested by these novels. Quick, easy read. Continuoius theme and characters in each 6 chapter book, but each chapter stands on its own as far as a complete mystery. I can hardly wait for Runcie to write his seventh. Don't have to read in order, but probably better to do. Each book references people and situations, which have been in previous books.
